LAS VEGAS – MMA Junkie was on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 202 event.
UFC Fight Night 202 took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streamed on ESPN+.
In the main event, Islam Makhachev (22-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) took on short-notice replacement Bobby Green (29-13-1 MMA, 10-8-1 UFC) in a 160-pound catchweight bout. In the middleweight co-feature, Misha Cirkunov (15-8 MMA, 6-6 UFC) met Wellington Turman (18-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC).

Round 1 – Altamirano sprints to the center and switches stances while pawing the jab. Hernandez striking from the outside. They clinch in the center, but nothing there. They break and then clinch again, battling for control in the center. Knees exchanged inside, but neither can get a dominant position, so they back away and reset. Altamirano the busier fighter as the exchange strikes. Hernandez. shoots, but Altamirano stuffs it. They’re trading punches in close range. Hernandez lands a nice left hand. Altamirano stumbles briefly, but he’s OK. Hernandez starting to dial it in with kicks, and he’s following behind with punches. Altamirano swinging back in some spirited exchanges. High kick scores for Hernandez. He shoots forward and wraps the body, and this time he’s able to drive Altamirano to the floor. Altamirano with guard, and Hernandez postures. Altamirano has to work from his back but scrambles up at the end, and they trade punches at the bell. MMA Junkie leans Hernandez with the late work, 10-9.
Round 2 – Altamirano again out quickly and looking to strike. He’s switching stances and rolling his shoulders before they move into the clinch. Nothing there, and the break away. Altamirano in the center, and he lands a big kick to the body and a crisp punch. Hernandez moves off the fence and answers with shots of his own. Knees thrown inside. High-paced scrap continues. Hernandez finding his range, but Altamirano digs to the body. Halfway through, and both men still moving well. Hernandez misses a big high kick. They again clinch, but it’s neutral, so it’s back to trading shots in the pocket. Altamirano finding success with kicks now, too, and he’s keeping the pace high. Hernandez counters with a clean right hand. Altamirano walks through a high kick. Altamirano wants an outside trip late, but Hernandez counters it, and they pop back to the feet at the bell. Another evenly matched round, and MMA Junkie leans Altamirano, 10-9.
Round 3 – Altamirano again switching stances as they start, keeping the movement high. They clinch, and it’s Hernandez on the outside. Hernandez wraps the body and wants the takedown, but Altamirano able to scramble up and free and land a big kick to the body. Altamirano rips off a punching combination and then kicks to the body again. Hernandez pulls away and kicks to the leg. Altamirano drives the action to the cage. Hernandez pushes off and lands a big knee inside. They move back to the center and trade punches. Pace still solid from both halfway through the final frame. Hernandez grabs the momentum, driving froward and firing punches. He drives in a knee to the body. Altamirano pulls away and scores with a few kicks to the body. Hernandez answers back with quick, straight punches. They trade kicks in the final minute. Punches in a phone booth. Both men still landing. Hernandez with a high kick. Altamirano scores a takedown at the bell. Hernandez pops up and lands a right hand. Another great round ends a great fight. MMA Junkie leans Hernandez, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28, but this could admittedly be all over the place.

Round 1 – Brahimaj takes the center and opens with a front kick that comes up short. Gillmore a little more steady on the outside. Brahimaj changes levels and drives through for the takedown. Gillmore turns to his knees to escape, and Brahimaj takes the back. He’s immediately looking for the choke. Gillmore on his knees but fighting away the hands. Still, he’s surviving. Chin is tucked. They hit the deck. Gillmore able to survive, but he can’t get away. Brahimaj lets go of the choke briefly and adjusts, immediately locking it in again. This time he gets the arm in position. Gillmore trapped and has to tap.

Round 1 – Perez circles left on the outside. Martinez holds position in the center. Low kicks traded, and Martinez briefly slips to the canvas but quickly stands back up. Martinez high kick blocked before a front kick lands up the middle. Martinez checks a low kick. Perez blocks a high kick. Both men patient but picking their spots. Martinez continues to rely on kicks as the lead strike. Perez flurry of punches comes up short. Halfway through the first. Martinez continues to land with that front kick to the body. Perez keeping his guard high, picking moments to rush forward with punches. Martinez dealign with it well. He fires a big high kick that lands. A leaping kick down the middle scores. Perez rushes with punches but comes up short. He does land a big right at the end that sends Martinez to the floor right at the bell. Still, MMA Junkie gives it to Martinez, 10-9.
Round 2 – Perez out quickly and looking to strike. Martinez still staying at range and looking to strike on the outside. Perez leading with his hands, and Martinez answering with kicks. Martinez slips on a high kick but pops back to the feet. Perez loading up on his punches but largely missing. Martinez has slowed down with his volume, though. He’s staying outside but not pulling the trigger quite as often. Perez throwing the heavier punches but not finding the mark repeatedly. He does score with a right hand. Perez lands with the low kick. Martinez answers He lands again. Martinez has some snap on those low kicks. He lands with a high kick. Perez answers with a flurry. It’s high highest volume of punches so far. Great late work from Perez, but that was about it. MMA Junkie leans again toward Martinez, 10-9.
Round 3 – Perez comes rushing out and looking to crawl. Martinez answers back with his hands and feet. It’s a brawl to start. Perez doesn’t sustain the pace though and quickly settles back into a more passive approach. Perez still leading with powerful punches, but Martinez is evading well and countering. Martinez scores with a nice left hand. Perez misses on big shots, and Martinez accurate with the return fire. He’s incredibly composed and dealing with his opponent’s charging attacks. Two minutes remain. Perez just misses a big spinning backfist. He tries another and gets countered. Perez just not getting the damage he wants. He ducks and shoots for the takedown, but Martinez stuffs it well and scrambles back to the feet. Martinez dictating the range and countering well. Perez still pushing, but it’s Martinez’s counters doing the real work. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Martinez, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27.

Round 1 – McKinney out quickly, but they stumble a bit as they clash, and it’s a scramble. McKinney able to settle on top, and Ziam looks quickly for the armbar. Not there, and McKinney moves out to side control. Ziam scrambles back to half-guard and is trying to slow things down underneath. McKinney controlling from the top and trying to isolate an arm. Ziam turns to try and escape, but McKinney gets to the back. Ziam turns, but McKinney sets again. He’s a little off to the side, but he wraps the arm under the neck and squeezes. Ziam looks comfortable at first, but McKinney holds it and gets the tap.

Round 1 – Pascual working from range and fires up a high kick that’s blocked. Nunes moves forward and wants to trade punches, and Pascual swings right back and motions for more. Nunes with a big size discrepancy, but she’s doing her best to get in and out of range. Pascual with punches and elbows inside as her opponent wades forward. Nunes pressuring with punches. She lands a straight left that sends Pascual to the floor briefly. She pops back up and starts pressing, but it’s wild, and a short Nunes punches sits her down again. Pascual pops back up, and Nunes continues to press with punches. Pascual presses forward and drives the action to the canvas. Nunes tries to scramble and turn it over, but Pascual is on top. She’s heavy there. Pascual turns and tries to invert for a triangle, but Pascual rides it out on top. Still, MMA Junkie gives it to Nunes, 10-9.
Round 2 – Pascual trying to be more aggressive early, but Nunes slipping and moving and countering well. Kicks traded. Nunes with an overhand left, and Pascual is hurt. Another one score, and Pascual drops. She pops up, and she wants a takedown. Nunes counters and settles on top. She’s looking for big elbows and punches from the top. Pascual turns and gives up the back. Nunes can’t get the choke. Pascual able to slip out the back door, and the move to the feet. Damage around the right eye of Pascual. Nunes pops her with another big left hand. Two more score. Pascual tries to shoot, but she can’t get close. Nunes kicks the leg and punches up top. She pushes aside another takedown attempt. Pascual drives through for a big takedown and nails it. Nunes has to settle for guard with a little less than two minutes. Nunes controlling the wrists and landing a few elbows underneath. Pascual is on top, but she’s not doing much with the position. Referee Mark Smith calls for action as we’re under a minute left. Nunes wraps things up and finishes on her back, but MMA Junkie gives her the round, 10-8.
Round 3 – Pascual fires up a high kick, and Nunes counters with punches. Nunes content to just move away right now and avoid the takedown. Pascual is faking on the takedowns, looking for the proper entry. Nunes not biting, keeping her space and landing power left hands when she feels comfortable. Halfway mark, and Nunes rips off a combination. She kicks the leg. She’s in complete control and just looking to avoid her opponent’s takedowns. Pascual trying to get in tight, but she can’t. She does land a few punches and change levels, but Nunes pushes her aside and moves back to the center.She shoots again, and Nunes stuffs it and makes her pay with a big left hand. Pascual showing heart, but she’s getting tagged. More lefts from Nunes. Pascual refusing to go away, but she can’t get any momentum going. Pascual does land a spinning backfist, but it glances off. Late takedown scores for Pascual, but it’s too late to do anything. MMA Junkie gives the round to Nunes, 10-9, awarding her the fight 30-26.

Bahamondes kicks the leg. He fires a left hand to the body. Bahamondes fluid, switching stances and throwing punches down the middle. The jab is quick, and he kicks the legs, as well. Low kicks traded, and Zhu lands a left hand up top. Bahamondes continues to switch stances and land down the middle. He’s the more active fighter. Zhu firing some power hooks but not landing much. Bahamondes landing systematically. Zhu shoots from range. Bahamondes stuffs it well and wraps the neck. Zhu leaps to the floor while spinning to get his back to the canvas. Bahamondes has to let go, but he’s still on control and postures and punches until the end. MMA Junkie gives it to Bahamondes, 10-9.
Round 2 – Both fighters out quickly, and Zhu is teeing off to start. Bahamondes trying to move as Zhu pressures. He does slip away, and the initial charge slows. Bahamondes lands a right hand up top. He diges to the body, as well. Bahamondes gaining back some momentum. Zhu trying to keep pressure high, but Bahamondes moving well and delivering combinations. Low kicks from Bahamondes, as well. Zhu focused on punches up top. He digs to the body, as well. Back and forth in the pocket. Bahamondes with a nice right hand over the top. Jab scores. Zhu with a knee inside. Solid right hand from Bahamondes at the bell. Close round, but MMA Junkie leans toward Bahamondes, 10-9.
Round 3 – Zhu again out quickly, but Bahamondes meets him in the center with a few punches. Bahamondes drives forward and is looking to scrap in tight. Bahamondes fighting well on the outside, moving laterally and striking. Zhu shoots in and drives the action to the canvas, but Bahamondes scrambles quickly back to his feet and drives long punches from range. Zhu changes levels again, but Bahamondes stuffs it and wraps the neck with a D’Arce. Zhu trying to roll out, but Bahamondes torques and squeezes. Zhu is trapped and has to tap.

They’re trading punches and kicks in close quarters. Petrosyan chopping the legs. Slapping kicks scoring. Rodrigues walking forward and not showing any indication of looking for a takedown. He scores with a right hand. Petrosyan with a left hand that scores. He’s fighting on the outside and moving well, but Rodrigues is landing his share of big punches. Petrosyan pushes out to the center. He lands two quick left hands. Rodrigues answers with a jab. Petrosyan kicks the legs and body. Close round, but MMA Junkie leans toward Petrosyan, 10-9.
Round 2 – Rodrigues again takes the center and looks like he wants to strike. He fires off a right hand. Another follows. He’s pressuring and landing. Petrosyan dealing with it well, but he’s getting touched. Left hand lands for Petrosyan. Right hands traded. Petrosyan landed a few sneaky good shots in there, and Rodrigues seems to be slowing just a little, but he lands a big right hand down the middle. Petrosyan kicking low. Petrosyan now the one moving forward. He land sa big left hand, but Rodrigues wobbles a bit and then fires right back. Less than two minutes left, and Rodrigues lands a left hand. Petrosyan adding jabs together and kicks to the body.Under a minute, and Rodrigues finally shoots inside and takes the action to the floor. Petrosyan turns to his knees against the cage and stands. He turns inside, and Rodrigues backs away. They finish on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it again to Petrosyan, 10-9.
Round 3 – Quick embrace to start the last round. Petrosyan chops the leg after a missed punch. Rodrigues still standing in front and looking to strike. Jabs traded. Low kicks traded. Rodrigues is firing big right hands. He land sa big shot. Petrosyan is hurt. Rodrigues looks for the takedown and takes his back. He turns to attack the leg. Not there, so he rolls again and gets to the back. Petrosyan’s face is covered in blood, but h does a great job of battling the hands. Petrosyan able to scramble free and stand up. His nose is busted, but he’s firing again. Little more than two minutes left, and they’re teeing off. Both throwing with power. Big left hands traded. Rodrigues with another right hand over the top. Pace still strong for how crazy this fight has been. One minute left. Both men throwing hard. Rodrigues right hand lands. Jabs traded. Petrosyan kicks to the body. He goes to the legs. Rodrigues thinks late takedown, but it’s not there. They trade until the end. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Rodrigues, 10-9, but awards the fight to Petrosyan, 29-28. Could be close.

Round 1 – Tsarukyan with an early low kick as he looks to navigate the range against the much taller Alvarez. Low kick from Alvarez, and Tsarukyan catches it and trips him up a bit. Alvarez to his back and tries to attack the arm, but Tsarukyan pushes forward and settles into his opponent’s guard. Tsarukyan with a few short elbows inside. Alvarez tries for a few elbows from his back. Tsarukyan with a few short punches. Alvarez tries to spin for the arm, but Tsarukyan able to posture and extract it. Alvarez tries to roll free, but Tsarukyan able to turn with him and settle back on top. Short strikes again from the top. One minute left. Alvarez with a closed guard. Alvarez again trying to sneak the legs up top, but Tsarukyan pushes them aside and lands a huge shot. Alvarez with a nasty cut, and blood is pouring out everywhere. He tries to grab the arm at the bell, but Tsarukyan pulls free. Alvarez slow to get up as the cutmen go to work. MMA Junkie gives the round to Tsarukyan, 10-9.
Round 2 – Tsarukyan with a jab and then a quick takedown. Alvarez holds the head, but Tsarukyan out to side control. Alvarez eventually lets go, and Tsarukyan goes back to work on top. Short punches. and elbows, and Alvarez is covered in blood again. Alvarez battling to try and get back to his feet, but Tsarukyan drives him down to the canvas again. Alvarez kneeling, and Tsarukyan is on the back and punching. Blood is streaming on to the canvas. Referee Chris Tognoni offers a warning, but Alvarez can’t really get free. Tsarukyan still punching away, and this fight is over.

They trade punches again, and Kim lands a nice left hand. Another flurry shortly after, and Cachoeira lands a big left. They trade powerful hooks in tight. Both are landing clean in a firefight. Kim moves in for a takedown but is pushed away. Kim trying to stick and move, and she’s the busier fighter. Cachoeira looking to score the bigger shots, but she’s allowing a volume advantage to her opponent. Cachoeira with a takedown in the final seconds, though Kim scrambles up at the bell. Close round, but MMA Junkie leans Kim, 10-9.
Round 2 – Kim again looking to jab and move. Cachoeira loading up on the big overhand. Jabs traded. Kim lands a nice right hand. Cachoeira has the power when she lands, but Kim is putting together combinations. Kim fighting on the outside and looking to keep her movement high, but Cachoeira is simply wading forward and loading up on bombs, which are having some effect. Leaping kick misses from Cachoeira. Kim’s jab still finding a home. She lands a right hand, as well. Cachoeira throwing bombs but missing quite often. Kim landing combinations. Big left scores for Cachoeira. Right lands, as well. She’s coming alive in the final minute and adding ups hots, but Kim still moving well and having success, as well. Another close one, but MMA Junkie leans toward Kim, 10-9.
Round 3 – Cachoeira comes out aggressive, looking to brawl in tight. Kim dealing with it well and firing back in combinations. Brute power from Cachoeira, but Kim is standing in the face of it and answering back. Both women landing clean. Neither backing down. Cachoeira’s right eye busted up and swelling. Cachoeira may be slowing a little bit, but she’s doing her best to match the pace. Cachoeira right hand scores, but Kim answers with her own. Kim’s nose busted up a but. Cachoeira misses on a big right and is tagged by a jab. Kim lands a big right. Another scores. Crisp jab. Cachoeira walking through it and lands a big Superman punch. Kim still has the higher volume, but Cachoeira walking through it and landing big shots. Elbows coming in. Kim is cut on her left cheek. One minute left. Cachoeira throwing bombs inside. Kim swinging back. Absolute firefight. Trading elbows inside. Brutal brawl. Cachoeira with a few knees. They’re relentless until the end. Vicious stuff until the final bell. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Cachoeira, 10-9, but gives the fight to Kim, 29-28. Could go either way.

Round 1 – Cirkunov with a low kick, but Turman punches over the top. They stay in the pocket and trade strikes a bit more. Turman clinches and wants the takedown. Cirkunov battling well, but Turman slips around to the back and jumps up, sinking the hooks. Cirkunov with two hands on his opponent’s left arm. Turman gets the right arm under the neck and is trying to squeeze. Turman continues supporting his opponent’s weight as he controls that arm, preventing the choke. Turman trying to get it with one arm. Cirkunov finally lets go, and Turman gets the left arm under the neck and wants the squeeze. Cirkunov in trouble but survives and is able to turn a bit, and Turman slips off and falls to the canvas. Cirkunov now looking to strike from a standing position. Turman tries to move forward into the legs. Instead, Cirkunov grabs the head and squeezes from north-south. Seems tight as he cinches it in, but he ends up letting it go. Cirkunov postures and punches. He tries to take the back in a scramble, but Turman settles back to the floor. Wow. What a turn of events. MMA Junkie leans Cirkunov, 10-9, in a round it looked like he was going to lose.
Round 2 – They engage quickly and look to strike. It moves to the clinch, and Cirkunov is on the outside as they hit the cage. Turman with a few short elbows inside before Cirkunov trips the action to the canvas. Turman in guard, and he turns incredibly quickly for the armbar. He has it in an instant, and Cirkunov has to tap. Wow.

Green with a jab that lands. He slips a couple of punches coming his way. Green with his hands low. Makhachev rushes forward and is able to clinch and drives the action to the fence.
